At today’s Live from Paris event, Google announced a slew of new translation-related features, such as enhanced contextual search, a revamped iOS app, and a seamless augmented reality translation feature through Google Lens.
Search engine giant Google is working to enhance contextual translation in English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. This means that the translation of words and phrases with multiple meanings will be determined by the context in which they are found. It’s a great tool for identifying idiomatic expressions and ensuring your sentences read smoothly. Similar to Linguee and Reverso Context in how it operates.
If you are not fluent in a language, this can help you avoid using the wrong meaning of a phrase. Google has stated that support for additional languages will be included in the upcoming update, which will be released in the coming weeks.
The Google Translate Android app received a makeover in line with the ‘Material You’ design language last year. Now, it has updated the iOS app with new features and a sleeker design. The updated app now features a large microphone button in the app’s centre bottom section for effortless voice typing. As you type, the iOS app’s dynamic font makes translations easier to read. The rework also makes switching between languages quicker and requires fewer taps.
The updated app also makes use of gestures, such as a downward swipe to access recently used translations and a long press of the language button to access a recently used language.
Basque, Corsican, Hawaiian, Hmong, Kurdish, Latin, Luxembourgish, Sundanese, Yiddish, and Zulu are just some of the new languages to receive offline translation support in the iOS app.

In September of 2016, Google demonstrated an updated Translate feature that better incorporates actual translated text into the background image. This ensures that the translated poster will fit in with the original design of the original. Currently, the feature is only available on Android devices with 6GB of RAM or more, but the company plans to expand availability soon.
In addition, Google revealed the worldwide rollout of multi-search and a number of Maps-related updates, such as immersive views in five additional cities and the availability of glanceable directions for all users.
